Sewer Line Inspections

Buying a home? That kitchen sure is beautiful. But how about the sewer line?
Do yourself a favour — find out if the drain line you’re buying is a sh*t show or not.

Realtors Need a last-minute sewer scope to go along with your client’s home inspection?
Same-day appointments are almost always available.

Typical Issues We're Looking For

Clogs & Obstructions

Over time, clogs & obstructions can form within your sewer line. Cooking oils and grease are particularly nasty since they can easily adhere to the pipe’s walls and allow other debris to stick to it.

Root Intrusion

Tree roots are surprising strong. Southern Alberta’s freeze-thaw cycles put additional stress upon sewer lines of all types and when a vulnerability occurs in the pipe, tree roots can enter—seeking out exactly what sewer lines provide them; water, air and nutrients. Once they enter, they’re difficult to remove and having an auguring service on a scheduled basis becomes one of your best bets at maintaining good flow.

Offset Pipe Joints

When sewer lines are installed in sections, they can become misaligned over time due to ground movement and/or tree roots surrounding the pipe. Major offsets can impede the flow of waste and, in some cases, cause a backup into the home.  Offsets are a tree root’s best friend—allowing easier access to enter the pipe. Fixing major offsets involve either excavating the damaged section or using trenchless methods like “pipe bursting”.

Sagging / Bellying

Bellies, or sagging within sewer lines, create low spots that are prime targets for the collection of debris and build-up. When this occurs, flow can be drastically impeded—which can eventually lead to a sewer backup. Major bellies are a result of sections of the pipe having insufficient slope to carry waste away from the home - often needing excavation to fix the problem.

The Toolbox

Only the best is good enough

At Mister Poop, we believe in using the best possible tools for the job. That’s why we’ve partnered with Hathorn, the industry leader in residential sewer scope and video recording technologies.

Our equipment is cleaned, callibrated and tested on a regular basis to ensure accuracy and reliability.

You, our client, deserve the best and we’re proud to bring you the state-of-the-art for each inspection we perform.

“A good tool improves the way you work. A great tool improves the way you think.”

The Process

Step 1 — Access

There are three primary ways we can gain access to the sewer line:

1. An established clean out—often set within a mechanical room or basement bathroom
2. The plumbing stack vent—those short chimneys located on the roof of the home
3. Removing a toilet—exposing the drain since the scope won’t fit through a toilet’s p-trap

Step 2 — Diagnostics

Using one of the above access points, the scope is pushed down the sewer line. Thanks to the quality of our equipment, a clear view of the drain line—along with identifiable issues within the pipe—can be seen and recorded.

Step 3 — Reporting

Reports are delivered within the same day as the inspection—allowing you to make an informed decision that meets your purchase conditions deadline. Observations, issues, recommendations, tips and a link to the cloud-based video are included with every report.

What does a sewer scope inspection include?

A sewer scope provides a detailed visual inspection of the property's sewer line system. The inspection will help determine the current condition of this system on the day of the inspection and identify potential problem areas. A written report, including a link to the on-site captured video, outlining the potential issues and at what approximate depths those issues are will be provided same-day. We do not repair, replace, or otherwise service the sewer line—but we do have some great recommendations for service providers below :)

How long does an inspection take?

With straightforward clean out access, inspections typically take about 40 minutes from start to finish. Add about another 10-15 minutes for roof entry via the plumbing stack vent. Budget about 60 to 75 minutes for an inspection using toilet removal for access.

Should we be there for the inspection?

Totally up to you :) You're more than welcome to watch the operation as we perform it—in fact we prefer that you do since we'll be able to identify and discuss any issues with the drain line as we inspect it. If you can't make it—no problem! We'll report to you and/or your agent with our findings after the operation by phone, text or email. Whatever works for you works for us.

Do I need to bring anything to the sewer inspection?

Not really. Well, maybe a healthy dose of intestinal fortitude; sewer line inspections can get a bit graphic. No need to take notes either since everything the camera sees will be recorded and all we discuss will be noted in your report.

Can you repair the issues that are found?

We've decided as a company to be strictly in the business of drain diagnostics and not cleaning or repair. We deem providing these additional services as a conflict of interest and want to remain as unbiased as possible.

Who do you recommend for sewer line cleaning?

In Calgary, we highly recommend the sewer line cleaning services of Ducky's Drains. We don't receive any compensation for making this recommendation; we just know and trust their work.

Who do you recommend for sewer line repair?

When it comes to more extensive sewer line repair or replacement, we very much like the work of Terraburst. Again, no compensation provided for making this recommendation—they just do great work.

When and how do I pay for the inspection?

After you've received your report, you'll receive an email invoice—payable online with a credit card...you know, for the travel miles.
